USER MANUAL
…02…Issue 1 …02… CAMPS
This page is intentionally left blank
1 I̲N̲T̲R̲O̲D̲U̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
The "USER MANUAL" is written for users of the CAMPS
System. It describes in detail the procedures and routines
necessary to optimize the daily operation of the CAMPS
System. Descriptions of commands, displays, and interpretation
of errorcodes are also provided.
The procedures and routines described throughout this
manual take the form of TRANSACTIONS.
A transaction is the dialogue which takes place between
the operator and the CAMPS System to execute a COMMAND.
The transaction identifies FORMATS and describes the
specific dialogue associated with each one. In each
case, a representative picture of the format is provided
(not to scale) on the right-hand page with a step-by-step
description of the associated dialogue on the left-hand
page.
Each format contains individual fields which are described
in terms of their elements, possible element values,
and the validation performed. Where SYSTEM RESPONSE
MESSAGES are returned as a result of garbled information,
these are also described.
Each acronym will be defined the first time it is used.
For ease of reference, a list of abbreviations is provided
in Section 5.1.
The Visual Display Unit (VDU) keyboard is repeated
in fold-out format (Figure 1-1) on the last page of
this Manual for quick reference.

This section describes the VDU characteristics applicable
to the USER POSITION. No attempt has been made to describe
all of the characteristics and functions available
as these are contained in the CAMPS VDU (see Applicable
Documents reference 1.)
2.1.1 D̲i̲s̲p̲l̲a̲y̲ ̲U̲n̲i̲t̲
Figure 2.1.1-1 is an illustration of the display screen,
showing a representative format.
The VDU screen is divided into two areas; a five line
VDU header (Figure 2.1.1-1.a) and a 22 line format
area (Figure 2.1.1-1.b).
The header contains terminal status information.
The format area is used by the system to display formats
and by the user to enter data.
V̲D̲U̲ ̲H̲e̲a̲d̲e̲r̲ ̲A̲r̲e̲a̲
1) T̲e̲r̲m̲i̲n̲a̲l̲ ̲F̲u̲n̲c̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-1.c).
This describes the transaction in course. It is
a 25 alpha-numeric field, i.e. "NEW MESSAGE PREPARATION".
It is updated on a per-format basis.
2) C̲l̲a̲s̲s̲i̲f̲i̲c̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-1.d)
This relates to the classification of the information
on the screen. It is a 20 character alpha field.
Displayed items with the classification identified
will be updated before the presentation of the
format.
For items where the classification will first be
recognized during validation, it will be updated
when the subsequent format is displayed.
The terminal and the user have in their profile
a preset highest classification . The default classification
appearing on the screen is the lower of these two.
A list of the classification possibilities are
shown is chapter 5.2 IDENTIFIERS.
Figure 2.1.1-1
3) T̲i̲m̲e̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-2.a)
This is the Time in DATE TIME GROUP format. It
is a 14 alpha-numeric field containing the Day,
Hour, Minute, Zone, Month, Year.
For instance: 192135Z ̲FEB ̲82.
This field is updated every minute.
4) Q̲u̲e̲u̲e̲ ̲I̲n̲f̲o̲r̲m̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-2.b)
The number of messages queued for the terminal
by precedence as well as those for coordination,
release, display, or response on a terminal, will
be shown. Each category is identified by an alpha
descriptor with a two numeric field for the number
of items of this category in the terminal queue.
Queue information is updated automatically every
minute except when FLASH messages are queued which
causes immediate update and a short audio alarm.
The "Cordination" queue displays the number of
draft messages incoming for coordination.
The "Release" queue displays the number of messages
awaiting release.
The "Display" queue shows the number of incoming
messages, comments, and outgoing messages.
The "Response" queue displays the number of retrieved
messages (from off-line database), append notifications
(off-line append), delete notifications, and release
notifications.
Figure 2.1.1-2
5) C̲o̲m̲m̲a̲n̲d̲ ̲L̲i̲n̲e̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-3.a)
The command line will be used for the insertion
of commands and entry of parameters.
Commands will be entered by pressing the command
function key (F1) which will cause the cursor to
jump to the command line in the header. The user
will then enter the command on this line. On pressing
the ENTER Key, the command will be executed, the
command line cleared, and the cursor repositioned
back within the main format area. A command will
consist of four alpha characters followed by a
parameter field, if required. Commas or spaces
will be used as separators, i.e. RECV, PP.
6) R̲e̲s̲p̲o̲n̲s̲e̲ ̲L̲i̲n̲e̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-3.b)
System response messages and replies to commands
where appropriate will be displayed in the response
line. It has a maximum length of 70 alpha numeric
characters.
Ex: TOO ̲MANY ̲PARAMETERS or UNKNOWN ̲COMMAND.
7) S̲y̲s̲t̲e̲m̲ ̲L̲i̲n̲e̲ (refer to Figure 2.1.1-3.c)
The user can enter the sign-on/sign-off command
by first pressing the SYSTEM function key "ATTN",
which will cause the cursor to jump to the system
line, and then enter the command.
Security warning and security interrogation is
also performed via this line. Password or Security
Code is entered here.
Password and Security Code will not be displayed
on the screen.
Figure 2.1.1-3
8) F̲o̲r̲m̲a̲t̲ ̲A̲r̲e̲a̲
The format area is divided into the margin area
(refer to Figure 2.1.1-4.a) and the user area (refer
to Figure 2.1.1-4.b).
This does not apply to the VDU HEADER AREA, which
occupies the full 80 character screen width.
9) M̲a̲r̲g̲i̲n̲ ̲A̲r̲e̲a̲ (Refer to Figure 2.1.1-4.a)

10) L̲i̲n̲e̲ ̲D̲e̲s̲c̲r̲i̲p̲t̲o̲r̲ (Figure 2.1.1-4.c)
A line descriptor will be given in the VDU margin
to indicate to the user if a line is repeatable
or not. During specific entries it will be indicated
if the entry is optional or mandatory.
11) E̲r̲r̲o̲r̲ ̲C̲o̲d̲e̲ (Figure 2.1.1-4.d)
An error code will be given in the VDU margin to
indicate to the user if the system has found invalid
data. You will find a list of the error codes in
chapter 4.2 (Respond Messages/Error Codes), which
describes the reason for the errors.
Figure 2.1.1-4
12) F̲i̲e̲l̲d̲ ̲D̲e̲s̲c̲r̲i̲p̲t̲o̲r̲ (Figure 2.1.1-5.a)
Each data entry field has a descriptor, specifying
whether the user should input alpha, numeric or
alphanumeric data, and whether the entry is optional
or mandatory. This descriptor is visible to the
user in the form of a symbol preceding each field,
as a reminder of the type of data required. The
descriptor will only be given for the first field
of a series of "identical" fields.
13) F̲i̲e̲l̲d̲ ̲P̲r̲o̲t̲e̲c̲t̲i̲o̲n̲
Unprotected data-entry fields are the only part
of the screen where characters can be written.
If the user does not enter a mandatory field, he
will be warned by an audiable alarm and the cursor
will stay in the mandatory field until the user
enters data.

3.1 I̲N̲T̲R̲O̲D̲U̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
All the functions and facilities available to you are
executed by using a series of 4-letter commands. Activation
of these commands, as well as the subsequent dialogue
which takes place after command execution, is described
in this section.
This description takes the form of step-by-step procedures,
numbered in chronological order, explaning what you
must do; what replies, messages, and codes you can
expect from the system; what further actions are necessary,
and descriptions of error messages associated with
the particular transaction in progress.
A transaction is the total process of command execution.
It consists of your dialogue with the system, the associated
VDU screen layout, the validation checks performed
on your entered data, and the error messages subsequently
displayed if you made a mistake.
The menu (or format) presented on the VDU screen consists
of data written in protected as well as unprotected
fields. Protected fields are reserved for use by the
system and you cannot write in them. You can only use
the unprotected fields for data-entry. After you have
completed input in one of these fields, the system
will automatically move the cursor to the first position
of the next field where data-entry is allowed.
When you have completed your input on the VDU keyboard,
the system will validate all your entered data for
correctness. Full validation only occurs after you
have pressed the ENTER key.
Before you proceed you should familiarize yourself
with Section 2 OPERATION, Section 3.1.2 SECURITY PROCEDURES,
Section 4.1 DISPLAY ERROR MESSAGES, and Section 5.1.1
