The BMI net is a teletype network connecting the government
agencies and ministries via an unmanned message switch,
which is controlled by another message switch installed
in a protected area. The ZVA emulates a TTY terminal.
The dialogue with the message switch is done in plain
language mode (Klarbetrieb) of the Elcrotel 4s crypto
device. When the message header is accepted by the
message switch, the ZVA, will switch the crypto into
secure mode (Schlusselbetrieb) for encryption of the
text part of the message. When the text has been transmitted,
the ZVA switches the crypto back to plain language
mode and sends the "End of text" sequence.
When a message, is sent to the ZVA, the message switch
will first request the ZVA for its identification code.
The ZVA answers and the message switch proceeds by
sending the header information in plain language, whereupon
the crypto is switched to secure mode by the message
switch and the text is received by the ZVA. When the
text has been received the message switch switches
the crypto back to plain language and sends the "End
of text" sequence to the ZVA.
Initially two BMI channels will be connected to the
ZVA. Each channel will operate at 100 baud, asynchronous,
current loop, half duplex with ITA 2 code.

The handling of a message to the transmitted to the
BMI message switch consists of the following:
- Dialogue
- Control of channel serial number
- Control of crypto device
- Generation of retrival key
- Logging of message

̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲ ̲
The abreviations used are in accordance with those
used in the BMI specification, Anhang 11, issued by
AA.
If addresses are wrong, the BMI net will request repeat
of the address. This request will be sent to the supervisor,
as it may be an error in the table used by ZVA, and
an automatic repetition would still give the same address.
The ZVA will check the channel serial number, which
is stepped up by the BMI net for each message sent
to AA, independent of the number of BMI terminals in
AA. The ZVA generates a retrieval key containing the
following elements:
- Channel Serial Number
- Originators DTG (filing time)
- Addressee (receiving address)
- Network designator
If errors in channel serial number is found, a message
will be sent to the supervisor terminal.
Any other irregularities will be transferred to the
supervisor for action. The message: "Schl…19…sselger…15…t einschalten"
from BMI net will cause transmission to be stopped
immediately.
2.2 Z̲V̲A̲ ̲M̲e̲s̲s̲a̲g̲e̲ ̲R̲e̲c̲e̲p̲t̲i̲o̲n̲
The handling of received BMI message requires the following
actions by the ZVA.
- Dialogue.
- Transmission of own address.
- Supervision of crypto switching to cipher mode
- Control of channel serial number
- Conversion of BMI message to AA format
- Generation of retrival key
- Logging of message.
- Analysis of header information (originator and
addressee) and priority.
The ZVA will transmit its own ID code as a circuit
control code. After this the ZVA looks for its own
address header. When the "End of text" sequence has
been received, the ZVA will check, if crypto is in
plain language mode and look for the date and time
group. If error messages are received the ZVA will
direct these to the supervisor position (Korrekturplatz).
This will also take place if an option code is received.
If an AAA priority is received, the message is sent
to the Network supervisor.
The message will be converted to AA format and a retrieval
key will be generated, which will contain the following
information:
Addressee (receiver address)
Originators channel serial number
Originators date and time of message
Originators name (address)
Addresee reception data and time
Addressee reception channel serial number
Network designator
3̲ ̲ ̲B̲M̲I̲ ̲S̲E̲R̲V̲I̲C̲E̲ ̲M̲E̲S̲S̲A̲G̲E̲S̲
The BMI can send free text service messages to the
ZVA. The ZVA will direct these messages to the network
supervisor, who will take proper action.
4̲ ̲ ̲U̲S̲E̲R̲ ̲S̲E̲R̲V̲I̲C̲E̲S̲
The BMI net can request repetition of either the text
or the whole message. Separate service lines are used
for this purpose. Any requests coming in on these lines
will be routed to the supervisor (Korrekturplatz) and
by pushing one of the function buttons on his keyboard
a retransmission of the text or the complete message
will take place. Requests from users will be handled
between the network supervisor and the BMI message
switch in a dialogue. The supervisor can also send
commands to the BMI computer for open/close line functions.
This will force the BMI computer to stop sending messages,
while transmission of messages from ZVA to BMI is still
possible.
A closed line status will be logged every 20 minutes
until the line is opened again.
5̲ ̲ ̲T̲E̲S̲T̲
For testing purposes a separate user circuit between
the ZVA and the BMI computer will be required. AA is
assumed to arrange for this circuit.
Christian Rovsing A/S will pay the rental cost for
this line during the test phase.
…01…6̲ ̲ ̲I̲N̲S̲T̲A̲L̲L̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
Installation will be performed concurrently with the
other elements of the LKSAA.
7̲ ̲ ̲M̲A̲I̲N̲T̲E̲N̲A̲N̲C̲E̲,̲ ̲D̲O̲C̲U̲M̲E̲N̲T̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲,̲ ̲T̲R̲A̲I̲N̲I̲N̲G̲
Maintenance of the BMI interface will be performed
as part of the general maintenance of the system.
The documentation to be delivered will be in accordance
with other LKSAA delivered documentation. Additionally
a BMI User Manual in German will be delivered.
Training of users in the BMI procedures will be included
as part of the training plan.
