1 G̲E̲N̲E̲R̲A̲L̲
1.1 S̲C̲O̲P̲E̲
The purpose of this instruction is to guide host nation
in performing installation of opto-cables.

1.3 R̲E̲Q̲U̲I̲R̲E̲M̲E̲N̲T̲S̲
The opto-cables will be provided by CR and shipped
to site 6 months prior to start of installation in
accordance with contract. The opto-cables will be terminated
by CR with connectors provided by CR.
Host nation will provide ducting for the opto-cables
in accordance with ref 1 document. Host nation will
run the cables from CAMPS equipment room to user terminals
as specified in ref 1, section 3.
When the opto-cables are installed they must be left
with a free end of 5 m above rack D, and 2 m at user
terminal positions (see ref 1 document). For splicing
a 2 m overlap is required.
The opto-cables shall be temporarily labelled by host
nation at the main racks, at user terminal position,
and at any splicing point required as specified in
ref 1 and 2.
The ducts must not be sealed until CR has completed
the equipment installation.
2 R̲E̲C̲E̲I̲V̲A̲L̲ ̲I̲N̲S̲T̲R̲U̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
The opto-cables are shipped to main site on rolls.
On receipt, the rolls must be inspected for any damage.
When the inspection is finished the receipt must be
confirmed by telex or letter through SHAPE to CR.
All rolls, including those intended for remote sites,
will be shipped to the main site address.
Each roll is marked with a number in accordance with
a cabling plan which shows the rolls allocated to rooms
(see Appendix A).
Rolls allocated for remote sites are also specified
in Appendix A.
Host nation will be responsible for distribution to
the applicable PHQ of those rolls intended for remote
terminals. If the rolls have to be temporarily stored,
they must be stored under the same conditions as required
for the main CAMPS equipment.
3 P̲U̲L̲L̲I̲N̲G̲ ̲I̲N̲S̲T̲R̲U̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
When pulling fiber optic cable, always remember that
the subject is glass - a delicate subject.
3.1 P̲U̲L̲L̲I̲N̲G̲ ̲P̲R̲E̲C̲A̲U̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
a) Before running the cable, a plan of the order in
which the cables are to be run must be made (see
Appendix A). This has to be done to avoid that
short bits of cable have to be spliced together.
Splicing of opto-cable is a delicate, expensive,
and timeconsuming task, which can be avoided by
following the cabling plan in Appendix A.
Besides the extra work, a spliced cable is always
more weak and less signal-efficient than an intact
cable.
If the cabling plan cannot be followed, please
notify CR through SHAPE.
The cable should not be placed directly from roll
into duct. It should be allowed to remain off roll
for 24 hours to prevent cable from buckling in
cable tray.
b) When using the appropriate pull-boxes, a correct
pull-loop and a moderate pulling force, the running
of opto-cable should present no problems providing
the following precautions are taken:
1) The opto-cable must never be bent to a radius
less than 13 mm during installation and a permanent
bending radius of less than 100 mm must be
avoided.
A sharper bending than this may cause micro
fissures in the glass to break up, which causes
degraded operation even if the fiber does not
break completely.
So -
2) Do not pull on kinks to undo them.
3) Do not wrap the cable round the hand when pulling
elsewhere than the pull-loop.
4) Do not pull the cable across sharp edges.
5) Do not use brute force. If the pulling is hard,
use liquid soap as a lubricant.
3.2 H̲O̲W̲ ̲T̲O̲ ̲P̲R̲E̲P̲A̲R̲E̲ ̲A̲N̲D̲ ̲R̲U̲N̲ ̲O̲P̲T̲O̲-̲C̲A̲B̲L̲E̲
3.2.1 P̲r̲e̲p̲a̲r̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ ̲o̲f̲ ̲P̲u̲l̲l̲-̲L̲o̲o̲p̲
To be able to connect the pulling wire to the opto-cable
it is necessary to make a pull-loop (see figure 3.2-1).
a) Remove approx. 100 mm of the white cover jacket,
using a cable knife (refer to table 3-1).
b) Remove all of the exposed black and white outer
jackets with the jacket stripper.
c) Now the yellow woven KEVLAR is exposed. Tear up
the weaving and thus expose the white inner jacket.
d) Snip off both inner jackets (and fibers) as far
as possible, without hurting the KEVLAR which is
the strength member of the opto-cable.
e) Now tie a reef knot with the ends of the KEVLAR,
making a loop as big as wanted.
This loop now should be sufficiently strong and
protecting the fiber.

a) To run an opto-cable two persons are required,
since it will not tolerate being forced across
an edge.
One person feeds the cable from the reservoir into
one pull-box while the other person pulls the other
end.
b) In this way of pulling cables, with only one pull-box
distance (max 20 m) at the time requires a technique
to avoid kinks, knots, and twisting.
1) Start by pulling double the required amount
through the first pull-box distance. Then pull
the end further down to the next pull-box.
Subsequently, a new pull-box distance of cable
is run down from the first pull-box to the
second, then from the second to the third and
so on.
In this way the cable to be handled will never
exceed 40 m.
2) One way of handling piles of excess cable is
to make "figure 8s" with the cable coming out
of the pull-box. When it is all stacked, turn
the heap to get the free end on top.
3.2.3 F̲i̲n̲i̲s̲h̲ ̲o̲f̲ ̲E̲a̲c̲h̲ ̲C̲a̲b̲l̲e̲
a) After running a cable, be sure to allow the required
lengths of additional cable to ease the connector
terminations later on (see document reference 1).
b) After running a cable, the integrity of the fibers
should be checked by means of flashlight.
If the test is successful, the cable should be
temporarily marked at both ends with the specified
cable number (see Appendix A and document reference
2). The final cable numbering will be done after
terminations during site installation.
