APPENDIX B2…01…*************
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR FILTER BOX
T̲E̲C̲H̲N̲I̲C̲A̲L̲ ̲R̲E̲Q̲U̲I̲R̲E̲M̲E̲N̲T̲S̲ ̲A̲N̲D̲ ̲S̲P̲E̲C̲I̲F̲I̲C̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
The Filter boxes to be supplied under this contract shall
meet the specifications and requirements specified in
this appendix.
1̲ ̲ ̲G̲E̲N̲E̲R̲A̲L̲ ̲S̲P̲E̲C̲I̲F̲I̲C̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
The Filter Box is the component through which all data
signals enter and leave the CAMPS mainframe. It shall
be designed to preserve the shielding effectiveness of
the CAMPS EMI racks where signal connections penetrate
the shield, while still allowing physical access to signal
connections. It shall also permit the connection of several
different types of cable shields.
Appendix B1 of this contract defines the V28(L)-adaptor
modules driving and receiving the electrical signals passing
the Filter Box.
See Appendix B1, section 1 for the overall mechanical
definition of the CAMPS EMI-racks and the physical position
of the Filter Box.
2̲ ̲M̲E̲C̲H̲A̲N̲I̲C̲A̲L̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲S̲T̲R̲U̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
The major component of the Filter Box is a metal box with
a lid for installation access. Fig. 2-1 shows the principles
of use and fig. 2-2 shows outline and dimensions. The
chassis is separated into compartments for shielding purposes.
It has inserts in the bottom and numerous cutouts for
D subminiature style signal connectors in the back. It
also has a tubular opening at the top.
The Filter Box shall be mounted inside the top or bottom
of the EMI rack designated "F" at the rear. It shall be
mounted securely to the top or bottom of the rack with
threaded pipe fittings. Normally, the fitting will be
a conduit adaptor, however, reducing or cable bushings
may also be used, depending on the application. All three
fittings will be used on all installations to insure a
good connection between the chassis and EMI-rack. If required
to preserve shielding effectiveness, an EMI-gasket shall
be mounted on the box contact surface to the racks, around
the perimeter. The Filter Box shall be steadied to the
rear mounting channels of the rack with a support bracket.
Insulating blocks are used with the support bracket to
prevent grounding the rear mounting channels to the rack
wall.
The IDF lid shall be removed from the rear of the EMI
rack to expose signal connections and the conduit openings.
Cables may be added through this opening as the system
expands or when diagnostic tests are performed.
The Filter Box and lid shall be constructed from 18 gauge
steel, zink plated after fabrication to prevent rust and
to provide a good contact surface for the EMI gasket.
Zink plating is also used on the EMI racks. All exterior
seams shall be continuously welded and ground smooth to
provide effective shielding. Interior compartments shall
be spot or plug welded for ease of manufacturing. Shielding
effectiveness need not be as great between compartments
as it must be to the outside area.
The lid shall be attached to the Filter Box with 8 screws.
The design of the gasket surface shall be such that the
screws do not provide compressive force for the gasket.
This is provided by careful control of mechanical tolerances
between the box and lid surfaces. The gasket is compressed
as the operator seats the Filter Box.
Extra stiffering of the lid and chassis is required for
this gasket scheme.
The gasket used shall be Tin plated Berrylium - Copper
finger stock. It is field replaceable in 18" lengths.
3̲ ̲C̲O̲P̲P̲E̲R̲ ̲C̲A̲B̲L̲E̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲N̲E̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
The holes for the signal connectors shall be designed
to allow for the following types of filtered connectors:
a1) 10-pin version.
The following pins are connected:
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 14, 16, 19, 20
Pin 1 is connected to chassis in both ends. All
other pins are connected through filters. Filter
characteristics are specified by ARC.
a2) 18-pin version.
The following pins are connected:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19,
20, 24, 25.
Pin 1 is connected to chassis in both ends. All
other pins are connected though filters. Filter
characteristics are specified by ARC.
Supplier of filtered connectors (type 52-765-001)
Spectrun Control Inc.
Fairview, PA 16415
Phone (814) 474-1571.
An area of 1 1/2 inches in height and 2 1/2 inches in
width is reserved for each connector in order to allow
for terminating of the cable shield with back shell of
the following type:
Glenair Inc. G 8209
The Filter Boxes shall be delivered with 53 blank cover
plates (not mounted) to be used for cover on holes, where
signal connectors are not mounted. The cover plates shall
be so designed, that they do not reduce the shielding
effectiveness of the box, when they are correct mounted.
4̲ ̲ ̲S̲E̲P̲A̲R̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲ ̲O̲F̲ ̲T̲H̲E̲ ̲F̲I̲L̲T̲E̲R̲ ̲B̲O̲X̲ ̲I̲N̲T̲O̲ ̲C̲O̲M̲P̲A̲R̲T̲M̲E̲N̲T̲S̲
The Filter Box shall be separated into three separately
shielded compartments. This prevents undesirable coupling
between signals at widely differing data rates. It also
allows differing cable types and differing cable shielding
methods for functionally differing sections of the CAMPS
system. (See fig. 2-2).
Upper compartment shall allow for up to 25 electrical
cable connections ("copper connections") marked A1-25.
Middle compartment shall allow for up to 20 copper connections
marked B1-B20.
Lower compartment shall allow for up to 8 copper connections
marked C1-C8.
Each compartment shall contain not only its own connectors,
but its own conduit connection. This allows the facility
conduit to be individually tailored to the destination,
length and transmission characteristics of the connections
made in each compartment.
5̲ ̲ ̲O̲P̲T̲O̲ ̲C̲A̲B̲L̲E̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲N̲E̲C̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
Provision shall also be made within the Filter Box for
optical cable connections. Since they are made entirely
from dielectric material, they do not breech the EMI shield,
not do they cross couple. Opto cable entrance into the
Filter Box shall be through a tube which acts as a waveguide
beyond cutoff. The opto cables may then be passed from
compartment A into compartment B or C through holes in
the compartment bulkheads.
6̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲D̲U̲I̲T̲,̲ ̲F̲I̲T̲T̲I̲N̲G̲S̲ ̲A̲N̲D̲ ̲I̲N̲S̲T̲A̲L̲L̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
Any fitting with a 2 1/2" pipe thread and either an integral
shoulder or a jam nut may be used with the Filter Box.
Listed with the most effective shielding conduit first,
ranked in order of shielding effectiveness.
- Ferrous water pipe with clean threaded fittings
- Ferrous rigid conduit with compression fittings
- Flexible conduit with ferrous convoluted inner
shield and brass or copper outer shields.
- Flexible ferrous conduit with spiral shield,
type EF.
- Double braided shield cable with anular ground.
