V24/V28 (L/L) ADAPTORS

1.1 S̲C̲O̲P̲E̲
It is proposed in this ECP that the design of the following
modules
a) V24/V28 (L) Adaptor 1
b) V24/V28 (L) Adaptor 2
is improved.
The resent design, as defined in CPS/SDS/001 and CPS/ECP/011,
can communicate on cable lengths up to approximately
15 m (50 ft).
The proposed improved design will be able to communicate
on longer cables, up to approximately 250 m (900 ft).
In tempest environments special shielding and grounding
requirements for the cable will be specified.
The improved modules will be named:
a) V24/V28 (L/L) Adaptor 1
b) V24/V28 (L/L) Adaptor 2
(L/L) means: Low level/Long distance.
1.2 A̲S̲S̲U̲M̲P̲T̲I̲O̲N̲S̲
a) It is an assumption for this ECP, that the change
proposed in CPS/ECP/009 to the CAMPS SRS (CPS/210/SYS/0001)
is accepted.
b) It is an assumption, too, that the proposed new
circuit is approved by ACE COMSEC. A report (Interim
report No. 3) has been delivered for approval attached
to letter from CR, dated 1981-06-12.
c) It is an assumption, too, that the proposed configuration
change presented in CPS/ECP/011 is accepted by
SHAPE.
1.3 B̲A̲C̲K̲G̲R̲O̲U̲N̲D̲
In the following a short summary of the discussions
between CR and SHAPE leading to the ECP is presented:
1) The CR proposal is based on the IFB requirement,
that the electrical specification on channels to
terminals and external circuits shall be according
to CCITT recommendation V24/V28. The recommendation
V28 is used for cable lengths up to 50 feet.
2) During the early CAMPS Progress meetings it occurred
that the cable lengths would exceed 50 feet in
a number of cases at the sites. It was pointed
out by CR, that here we had a problem area. The
problem was discussed, and no solution was found
to eliminate the problem.

b) CAMPS Site Equipment, drawing No. 1-152, Issue
1.
3) During the meeting at CR in October 80, where the
Tempest Solution including the use of EMI-racks
was discussed, it was pointed out by Mr. Philip
Becker from CR's Tempest Consultant (Atlantic Research
Corporation, ARC) that a driver/receiver circuit
allowing for cable lengths exceeding 50 feet (up
to 900 feet) was known by ARC. ARC's experience
was that this circuit could be used in Tempest
installations, even if it could not meet the 1
mA-requirement of the CMAPS SRS (see above).
It was decided that CR/ARC should furnish ACE COMSEC
with a rationale on this driver/receiver concept
in order to make it possible for ACE COMSEC to
judge if this was a way to eliminate the 50 feet
problem area.

4) On a meeting at SHAPE, Mr. Philip Becker turned
over to ACE COMSEC the promised rationale in INTERIM
Report No. 3.
This report was reviewed by ACE COMSEC, and it
was decided that CR should request for this actual
ECP in order to open for the improved design.
The immediate reaction of ACE COMSEC was that they
would be able to accept the design proposed in
INTERIM report No. 3 based on the revised 1 mA-requirement.

a positive influence, see sect. 5.4.2.

It is in this ECP proposed that the V24/V28 (L) adaptor
modules to be delivered for CAMPS are improved by changing
the circuits on the modules. The concept of the new
circuits is described in Interim Report No. 3 from
ATLANTIC RESEARCH CORPORATION, appended as appendix
A.
5.1 P̲R̲O̲P̲O̲S̲E̲D̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲F̲I̲G̲U̲R̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
All current adaptors, i.e. modules named:
a) V24/V28 (L) Adaptor 1
b) V24/V28 (L) Adaptor 2
are replaced by the improved adaptors:
c) V24/V28 (L/L) Adaptor 1
d) V24/V28 (L/L) Adaptor 2
5.2 C̲U̲R̲R̲E̲N̲T̲ ̲C̲O̲N̲F̲I̲G̲U̲R̲A̲T̲I̲O̲N̲
The current configuration of each site is as described
in CPS/SDS/001 amended by CPS/ECP/011.
5.3 D̲E̲S̲C̲R̲I̲P̲T̲I̲O̲N̲ ̲O̲F̲ ̲C̲H̲A̲N̲G̲E̲
Equipment matrix and configuration is unchanged in
relation to the baseline described in sect. 5.2.

5.4.2 I̲n̲s̲t̲a̲l̲l̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲
The risk, that the need for modems/amplifiers will
occur during the installation phase due to difficulties
with signal cables longer than 95 m (50 ft), is strongly
reduced.
A risk that problems will occur during the installation
phase, which is a critical phase, has thus been essentially
reduced.

5.4.4 S̲p̲a̲r̲e̲s̲
The improved modules must be incorporated in the RSPL/ASPL.
