.TH GFTOPXL 1L 10/16/86
.SH NAME
gftopxl - convert generic font files to pixel (pxl) format
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B gftopxl
gf_file_name [pxl_file_name]
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I Gftopk
converts a generic font file (output by Metafont) to a
packed font file for use by dvi-reading programs. Pixel
format files use uncompressed raster images of the
character, and thus are usually somewhat larger than the
corresponding gf file (which uses run encoding) and much
larger than packed fonts (which use more sophisticated
methods). Perhaps for on-line previewers, pixel format fonts
are still useful because no translation needs to be done on
the character to get the bitmap.
.PP
The gf filename on the command line must be complete. Because
the resolution is part of the extension, it would not make
sense to add on a default extension as is done with TeX or
dvi-reading software. The pk file name defaults to the same
root as the gf file, with the `pk' extension replacing `gf',
and the ``magnification'' replacing the resolution. (The
magnification is the resolution divided by 200, multiplied
by 1,000.) For example, the input file
.I io.300gf
would become
.IR io.1500pxl .

.SH "BUGS"
Far too many (virtually all, in fact) device drivers still
use pixel format fonts.
.SH "AUTHORS"
Arthur Samuel wrote the program. The program was published as
part of the
.I MetafontWare
technical report, available from Stanford. Paul Richards
ported it to Unix.
