pfd2tfm \- convert a PFD and AFM file into a TFM file for TeX and a PDR file for dvitps.

.SH "DESCRIPTION"
\fIpfd2tfm(l)\fR converts PFD and AFM files into TFM and PDR files so
that \*(PS fonts can be used in TeX and the resulting files can be printed
with \fIdvi2ps(l)\fR.

If the name of an AFM file is given like, for instance, Helvetica,
the two files PS-Helvetica.tfm and PS-Helvetica.pdr are generated. Observe
that in this case the file extension afm must be given.

If, on the other hand, a PFD file is given then all the information about
which \*(PS font will be produced etc. is contained in this file. PFD files
among other things allow a wide variation of the \*(PS font. See the report
mentioned at the end for details what information these afm files might contain.

.B \-m \fImap file name\fR
For versions of Unix which only allow short file name Adobe's TranScript
package provides a mapping file which maps a full \*(PS file name to a
short version of it.  This option allows the user to specify such
mapping file. The file is normally called font.map.

Assuming you use this option observe that in the PFD file you must use the
regular full \*(PS name. Also if you invoke \fIpfd2tfm(l)\fR directly give
the full AFM file name, not the abbreviated version of it.

.B \-p \fIdefault encodings directory\fR
Pick up all default encoding information from the specified directory.
The default for this directory is PS_DEF_ENCODINGS.

.B \-q
Quiet: do not print any messages while processing a DVI file. See also the \-v option.

.B \-v
Verbose: print extensive messages while processing the DVI files. See also the \-q
option. The default is somewhere between \-q and this option.

This environment variable determines a path to locate AFM files.
The default is
"AFMPATH_DEF".

.B TEXFONTS
In case font emulation with \*(PS fonts is used the program must locate TFM
files. The environment variable given here is used as path to locate those files.
The default
"TEXFONTS_DEF"
is used if the environment variable is not set.
