.TH CHD 1
.SH NAME
chd - choose directory with name completion
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B chd
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I chd
allows you to jump around in a directory tree in order to choose a new
directory. The current directory is read and a list of subdirectories is
compiled. A name completion routine is used to allow the user to choose
a subdirectory, or .. for the parent directory.
.sp
The name completion routine appends input characters to a string. An
input of <space>, <tab> or <return> causes it to try to match the current
string against a list of known strings, in this case directory names. The
input string will be completed to the best possible match. A <linefeed> will
cause the first possible match to be selected. ESC, ^D, and ^G cause
the routine to exit.
.sp
When the name completion routine exits, the
currectly chosen directory path is printed. This can then be fed to cd
in the shell to accomplish the change. For example:
.br
alias cx 'set nwd=`chd`; cd $nwd'
.SH LIMITATIONS
Always starts at the current directory.
