cfs \- check file states
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B cfs
\-[scudt][v]  statfile  [filename ...]
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I Cfs
maintains a
.I statfile
for checking the states of many files.
.I Cfs
checks for changes in most of the parameters returned by the
.BR stat (2)
system call, including:
inode number,
file mode,
link count,
owner,
group,
length,
modification date/time,
and
inode change date/time.
Access date/time is not checked for obvious reasons,
and modification date/time is not checked for character or block special
devices.
By checking file states on a regular basis,
you can help insure the security of the files checked.

Normal use of
.I cfs
is with the
.B \-s
option, as in:

checks the Status of each filename in
.I statfile
against the recorded status.
If any differences are found,
a warning message is printed on standard output,
and
.I cfs
exits with an error status.

Creates a
.I statfile
from a list of filenames read from standard input.
.IP "\-u"
Updates
.I statfile
for each
.I filename.
If no entry is found, the entry is added.
.IP "\-d"
Deletes the entry for each
.I filename
from
.I statfile.
.IP "\-t"
prints a Table of contents for the entire
.I statfile
if no filename present.
With 
.B \-tv,
prints the status information.
Output format is similar to the output from \*(lqls  \-lig\*(rq,
with the addition of inode change time after the modification time.

Verbose option,
prints a file-by-file description of the actions taken.
Can be added to any of the other options, 
i.e.

To create a

for your home directory you could use the following sequence:

.SH NOTES

is exclusively locked using
.IR flock (2)
for
.I any
operation.
.I Cfs
will exit with an error message if the
.I statfile
is locked.

When creating a
.I statfile,
use absolute pathnames for best results
e.g. \*(lq/we/foo/bar\*(rq not just \*(lqbar\*(rq.

may be glued together using
.BR cat (1).
Otherwise, the status data is stored in binary form,
and the
.IR statfile s
should not be read or edited.

The file status stored in the statfile doesn't match the current status of
.IR FILENAME ,
or
.I FILENAME
doesn't exist.
With the
.B \-v
option, more detail is printed.
You should investigate this potential security violation.

can't properly check the status of the

This bug is not a fault of the program \-
\*(lqTime is Mother Nature's way of keeping everything
from happening at once.\*(rq
