The X window system is distributed as a compressed tar file
to save space.  To extract the data, first build the program
uncompress from the sources in the subdirectory `compress'.
`uncompress X.V10.R4.tar.Z' will delete that file and create
a tar file named X.V10.R4.tar.  A more cautious alternative is to do
`uncompress -c X.V10.R4.tar.Z > X.V10.R4.tar', which avoids
deleting the original .Z file.

The next step is to extract the tar file with
   mkdir X
   cd X
   tar xf ../X.V10.R4.tar

Then follow the instructions within.
