.TH VMFLOP 8
.SH NAME
vmflop \- unix on a floppy diskette
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B Boot: fd(0,0)vmflop
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I Vmflop
is a special version of genix that can exist on a floppy diskette
and does not use the hard disk.
The block device floppy drive
.I /dev/flop
serves as root and swap device for such a genix.
The swap area (there must be one) consists merely of the first
unused block of the file system on the diskette,
and genix probably never bothers to make use of it.
.LP
.I Vmflop
is booted by giving the name
.I fd(0,0)vmflop
to the boot program.
The diskette containing
.I vmflop
must be inserted before hitting return,
and must remain inserted until the system is rebooted.
The system can run only in single\-user mode.
It is (naturally) somewhat slow compared to the hard disk
genix, and there's room for only about 20 unix commands.
.LP
There are two uses for the floppy diskette genix: system generation
(see
.IR sysgen (8))
and hard disk repair.
Actually all machines should have a back\-up unix on the hard
disk since such a unix is more reliable for repair purposes.
A third use on machines with 2 disks attached might be
disk-to-disk copy using a floppy system that includes
.IR bcp (N).
This cannot be done from a hard disk unix since an active
file system will not be copied consistently.
.LP
New floppy genixes are made in the directory
.I /sys/flop.
The files with names ending in ".p" are prototypes
used by
.IR mkfs (8)
to create an initial floppy system.
To make small modifications, mount /dev/flop on
.I /sys/flop/root
and copy or delete files in it.
Be sure to execute sync before unmounting
(the system appears not to do this automatically).

.SH BUGS
Genix can get confused about the actual memory available
and complain about "not enough core".
If that happens, reboot.
