INTRODUCTION↲ ↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The RC855 is designed for the construction of distrib-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄uted systems in which each terminal can be alternately ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄used for communication with a host computer and as a ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄local microcomputer.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The RC855 is available as a work station, capable of ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄performing different functions according to the soft-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄ware loaded.↲ ↲ ╞ The RC855 is also available as a dedicated terminal.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The work station and the dedicated terminal are based on ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄the same display unit and keyboard. The equipment is in-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄stalled by means of cables, which are connected to the ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄back panel of the base of the display unit. Some of the ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄connections are always used (e.g. keyboard and power); ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄the use of others depends on the configuration (e.g. ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄printer, host computer, and RcCircuit).↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The following can be connected to the RC855: one or two ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄diskette drives; a Winchester disk drive; or a diskette ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄drive and a Winchester disk drive. A printer can be con-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄nected as well.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The RC855 terminal can also be part of an RC855-based ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄cluster configuration as well as an RC890-based cluster ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄configuration.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆An RC855-based cluster may comprise as many as 8 ter-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄minals (work stations and/or dedicated terminals); these ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄are interconnected by means of RcCircuit, an ordinary ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄twisted-pair cable laid through wall boxes/sockets.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆An RC890-based cluster may comprise as many as 32 de-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄vices. Devices are printers and work stations and/or ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄dedicated terminals. If a terminal communicates with ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄several hosts at the same time, it will take up a cor-↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄responding number of devices in the RC890 cluster.↲ ↲ ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ ↓ ↲ ↲ ┆b0┆┆a1┆2. INSTALLATION PLANNING↲ ↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆The following general requirements should be kept in ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄mind when planning the installation of RC855 equipment:↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆- There must be plenty of room around the equipment.↲ ↲ ╞ - ┆84┆The temperature must be kept between 16 and 32┆81┆o┆82┆C and ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄the relative humidity between 40 and 60%. The ideal ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄conditions are 21┆81┆o┆82┆C and 50%.↲ ↲ ╞ - ┆84┆Avoid static electricity as much as possible. Dis-↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄charges should not exceed 2 kV.↲ ↲ ╞ - ┆84┆The equipment requires the following in the way of ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄power: 220/240 V AC _┆88┆+ 10%, 50 Hz _┆88┆+ 2 Hz.↲ ↲ ╞ - ┆84┆All sockets must be grounded with a resistance of 10 ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄ohms or less.↲ ↲ ╞ - ┆84┆The terminal power supply must originate in a bank by ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄itself and be separated from any circuit breaker in ↓ ┆19┆┆8b┆┄┄the rest of the existing power supply.↲ ↲ ╞ - Sockets with glow lamps are recommended.↲ ↲ ╞ ┆84┆Further information on the installation of RC computer ↓ ┆19┆┆89┆┄┄equipment in general is found in Ref. 2.↲ ↲ ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ ↓ ↲ ↲ ┆b0┆┆a1┆3.
