invoke max with -msgmode
user's .maXdefaults file will have something like this:

since I'm not running PP here (and my version seems to deliver in
822 not split-X.400 mode), I can't do any more work. But here's a
list of what I think remains:
- test out recursion with .fip directories
- need edit/show/print for .hdr files
