[This file is ./DVIware/laser-setters/dvi-to-ps/NOTE-TeXPS.
It is intended for users of the UNIX TeX distribution.
August 1990.]
In general, the material in the ./DVIware directory is passed on
because people request it frequently, or because it has been generously
offered for distribution by reputable programmers. Because we do not
have the equipment with which to test these various device-specific
programs, we are--in general--not able to offer support for them.
If, however, you have questions about the installation process of
the TeXPS package, we may be able to help you; so that you are
welcome to try us first if you run into problems.
Questions and problems that go beyond installation, however,
should be directed to the author of this package--Stephan von Bechtolsheim.
Please refer to the primary README file in the directory ./TeXPS
for an address.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In anticipation of certain questions and problems, we have sketched
the installation procedure as follows. These notes are *n*o*t* a substitute
for reading the ./TeXPS/README file; so please be sure to read that file
thoroughly *b*e*f*o*r*e* you begin to do any of the following.
The one thing in the ./TeXPS/README file that you may ignore is the
instruction concerning the poolsize for LaTeX. If you used the default
compilation for TeX on this tape (that is to say, if you did not apply the
small TeX patch prior to your compilation of TeX), you HAVE a big TeX,
and you do not have to worry about increasing the poolsize for LaTeX.
With version 3.6, Dr. von Bechtolsheim began moving TeXPS away from
its dependency on psrev. While that dependency has not been entirely
eliminated, he has begun incorporating the use of dviselect -- a program
that enables you to select a subset of pages out of a .dvi file, for
printing or previewing. So: if you do not have dviselect already installed
on your machine, see the file ./DVIware/laser-setters/mctex/NOTE-for-TeXPS-users.
Sketch of Installation Process for the TeXPS package:
In ./TeXPS (the % merely signifies your prompt):
% cd setup
% mkdir hostname [hostname = name of your machine,
or whatever you wish.]
% cp generic.host.name/* hostname
% cd hostname
% emacs local-defs [I.e., edit local-defs.
Choose an installation number for your site:
you can appropriate any of those already given
-- [1] through [11] --
or you can choose a new number of your own.
Edit this file with great attention and care.]
% emacs makefile [Edit the makefile so that the INSTALLATION_NUM =
whatever you chose as your installation number
in local-defs.]
[Take a look at the contents of ../../afm.
If you do not already have these *.afm files elsewhere on your system,
copy these now to whatever you defined in your local-defs file
as your AFMPATH_DEF = .]
Place yourself back in ./TeXPS:
% make World
% make doc-all
% make install
END OF FILE.
