This directory tree contains a lot of games, pastimes, jokes, line printer
posters etc. Not all programs will compile on your machine because of
lack of compilers (the programming language used in these programs is
mostly C, but also Prolog, Pascal and Fortran are used amongst others)
or probably because of operating system differences. There are programs
that will work on Berkeley systems only, others that will work on
System V only etc. But I am sure there is at least one program that
will compile and run on your system. Also in a number of cases your system
might require some patches to the sources that are available. Look out
for files with a name ending in diffs or something like that. Patches
and bugfixes as they have been published have been applied already, but
original sources are still available in files with a name ending in .orig
(and the patch files are also present).

Note that a lot of programs use curses and that there are some differences
between System V and BSD in this respect. The most commonly heard
complaint is that the BSD routine 'cbreak' is called 'crmode' in System V,
etc.. You have to feel your way.

A general advice is first read README (or READ_ME or readme) and Info files
etc. Next check the Makefile (if present) and also possibly files like
config.h or config.c.

This directory contains three main subdirectories:
	General for non-specific programs
Sun for Sun (Suntool) specific programs
X for programs running under X windows (in general
for use under X11). (Some of these programs are
already present in some X distributions.)

The sources come mostly from the Usenet sources newsgroups: net.sources,
net.sources.games, comp.sources.games etc. As a service a complete list
of all articles issued in comp.sources.games is supplied (file subjects).

No care has been taken that all filenames conform to the System V limit of
14 characters, so problems may be expected in this case. You will find
a list of the files in this directory in the file FILES, so perusal of that
may already help you (but watch out, it is long).

Below follows a list of games etc. included. No attempt has been made
to describe each game etc., but in most cases there are files in the
various directories that describe it.
