.SH NAME
dvi \- print a TeX dvi file piecemeal on a LaserWriter
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B dvi
[-fig] [-mac] [-x pagenumber] [-f pagenumber] [-t pagenumber]
[-s pages-per-job] [-o] [-h file] [-8] [-4] [-2] dvifile[.dvi]
.SH DESCRIPTION
This program converts a DVI file to PostScript, and writes
the result to the LaserWriter.
.SH ARGUMENTS
.TP
.B -fig
includes the psfigtex(1) prolog (/usr/lib/tex/figtex.pro) in the PostScript
file's prolog
.TP
.B -mac
includes the Macintosh LaserWriter prolog (/usr/lib/ps/mac.pro) in the
PostScript file's prolog
.TP
.B -h file
includes file in the PostScript file's prolog
.TP
.B -x pagenumber
specifies a lonesome page to be printed. This option
(which should appear before the
.B -f
and
.B -t
options) can be repeated many times to get a scattered collection of pages.
.TP
.B -f pagenumber
specifies the starting page of the TeX document (default 0) and
.TP
.B -t pagenumber
specifies the ending page of the TeX document (no
default). Dvi will split the document into easy-to-handle chunks for the
LaserWriter, if you have told it
the length of the document by using the
.B -t
option. If you do not specify the
.B -t
option, dvi will send the file en masse to the LaserWriter.
.TP
.B -s size
specifies the length (in pages) of the easy-to-handle
chunks. The default is 12 pages, which is the optimum
size for LaTeX. If you are using `bare' TeX, then chunk
sizes of 20 to 30 pages can be used.
.TP
.B -o
will put the PostScript file out on standard output,
instead of sending it to the LaserWriter
.TP
.B -2
will put two TeX pages onto one sheet of paper
.TP
.B -4
will put four TeX pages onto one sheet of paper
.TP
.B -8
will put eight TeX pages onto one sheet of paper
.TP
.B -16
don't push your luck!
.SH CONCEPTS
The LaserWriter is not a perfect TeX engine, since it easily
runs out of Virtual Memory when printing TeX documents using
bitmapped fonts (eg the cmr and amr families), so for long
documents, it is necessary to print a limited range of pages
at a time. Dvi will automatically split the document into
12 page chunks (unless you override this with the
.B -s
option). The pages are printed out in the following order:
0-11, 12-23, 24-35..
