There is no better way to describe the content of this directory
structure than to quote part of a message from Don Knuth about the
fonts in the ./concrete directory.  For the reasons he suggests
below, this directory will make no attempt to collect everything,
but we hope to offer some instructive examples.  Concrete is the first
of them.

   "Sooner or later, hopefully sooner, people will begin to discover the
    pleasures of making one-off fonts, and they'll learn that it's easier
    to do that than to get the parameter files from their friends! Many of
    the 75 `standard' CM fonts are merely demos of what could be done; a
    `complete' font library would need thousands of fonts, and it still
    wouldn't be complete.

   "For example, I just made our annual Christmas newsletter. We had to go
    down to nine-point type, with text set solid (no leading between
    lines), because of space and design limitations. Computer Modern 9pt
    was OK, but not elegant; so I decided to make new fonts for the
    occasion using the trick that's used to print Bibles in small formats,
    namely to decrease the height of ascenders and descenders.  I simply
    subtracted 30/36 from the cap_height etc measurements and 6/36 from
    the comma_depth and descender_depth of a 9pt font; the result was a
    very readable font for use with \baselineskip=9pt.  (Italic and
    slanted fonts to match also turned out very nicely.)  Such changes
    cannot be made to Postscript fonts, but they are easy and effective
    with a true meta-font. And the number of such possibilities is
    endless.... The Concrete Roman and Italic family was just another
    example where a small amount of effort produced a new look."
