The problem I am having is that syslogd doesn't seem to want to create the log file. I have these lines in my /etc/syslog.conf # # syslog messages from Annex terminal server # local7.debug /usr/local/etc/annex/syslog Now if I issue the commands: mv /usr/local/etc/annex/syslog /tmp/foo kill -HUP `cat /etc/syslog.pid` Syslog stops logging info from the terminal server, but if I issue the commands: (i.e. create a zero length file first) mv /usr/local/etc/annex/syslog /tmp/foo echo >/usr/local/etc/annex/syslog kill -HUP `cat /etc/syslog.pid` It works fine. This does not make sense to me. The man page states: "syslogd reads the configuration file when it starts up, and again whenever it receives a HUP signal, at which time it also closes all files it has open, re-reads its configura- tion file, and then opens only the log files that are listed in that file." Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here? The problem I am > having is that syslogd doesn't seem to want to create the log file. A traditional syslogd won't create the log files; i.e., they have to exist before it is started or it is HUP'd. This is the reason why /var/adm/newsyslog does a "cp /dev/null syslog" before the "kill -HUP".
