This directory contains the Cyrillic and Special Symbol fonts which were announced in TUGboat Volume 6 (1985) No. 3 124--8. The American Mathematical Society has released these fonts unconditionally, and there are no restrictions on their use. They do, however, represent some five years of work by Ron Whitney and others at the AMS, and we encourage all users to include an acknowledgement of the AMS in publications which make extensive use of them. The design was targeted at a resolution of 5333 lines to the inch for an Alphatype CRS typesetter, and the true results should be judged by the specimens in the TUGboat article mentioned above. The low-resolution analogs appear to us to be a bit dark and we may, in future, be able to offer corrected low-resolution versions. These are probably the last significant products of the old METAFONT-in-SAIL program. Any users on ARPANET who can still run this program (TOPS10 and TOPS20 systems) can find the *.MF sources on SCORE, at Stanford. The directory is <TEX.AMSFONTS>. To incorporate these fonts into your typesetting environment, copy the amsfonts/tfm/*.tfm files into the directory specified by your `texfonts' path, and copy the appropriate lot of *.nnnnpxl files into a directory where your favorite device driver can find them. (If you are working in an environment which does not understand paths, we recommend that you use the directory /usr/lib/tex/fonts) In the basic `amsfonts' directory you will find two *.def files which should be copied into the directory specified in your `texinputs' path. (As above, we recommend /usr/lib/tex/macros as the default.) You should include the file `\input cyracc.def' to establish the accent sequences whenever you wish to make use of the Cyrillic fonts. You may also wish to put `mssymb.tex' into the same path, since it provides the TeX naming conventions for all the new symbols in the `msxm' and `msym' fonts. The file cyrmemo.tex should be `TeX ed' and printed as a guide to the use of the Cyrillic font.
