.TH CHTOPX 1L 10/16/86
.SH NAME
chtopx - convert character (chr) format files to pixel (pxl)
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B chtopx
chr_file_name pxl_file_name
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I Chtopx
translates a character format file (that a human can easily read)
to a pixel format file (that device drivers and other
programs can easily read). Character format files were
created so that fonts created with Metafont79 (``old''
Metafont) could be edited. Now that Metafont84 has been
released, the fonts produced should not need nearly as much
editing. Furthermore, with the widespread advent of
bitmapped terminals, a true font editor should be
written.
.PP
Also, pixel format is obsolete, and should be used only in
exceptional circumstances. (Packed font format or generic
font format are preferable.) Thus, this program is doubly
out-of-date -- but may still be useful for all of that.
.PP
Both the
.I chr_file_name
and the
.I pxl_file_name
must be complete. No adding of default extensions is done.

.SH "AUTHORS"
Donald Knuth wrote the program (I think). It was published as
part of the
.I TeXware
technical report, available from Stanford. Mike Harrison and
Richard Furuta ported it to Unix.
