README for Edition 0.1 beta of the Emacs Lisp Reference Manual.

Robert J. Chassell
23 June 1989

* This directory contains the texinfo source files for the Reference
Manual and special versions of texinfo.tex and texinfmt.el, as well as
make-permuted-index. Also, it contains, or should soon contain,
makeinfo.c.

* The Emacs Lisp Reference Manual is turning out bigger than we
expected. It totals over 500 pages when printed on 8.5 by 11 inch
paper and the unsplit Info file is just under a megabyte.

* The manual is nearly ready for release, but needs to be
thoroughly reviewed for errors and other infelicities.

Please read the manual and report errors back to us.

* You can format this manual either for Info or for printing hardcopy
using TeX.

** This distribution contains a Makefile that you can use. Otherwise,
here are detailed instructions:

** HARDCOPY: A copy of the version of `texinfo.tex' that formats this
manual is included in this distribution. The standard release version
of `texinfo.tex' will not work. (Please note that we are not printing
and selling the manual in hardcopy yet; that will come later.)

The master file for formatting this manual for Tex is called
`lispref.texinfo'. It contains @include commands to include all the
chapters that make up the manual. In addition, `lispref.texinfo' has
the title page in a new format designed by Karl Berry, using the
@titlespec command.

To create a DVI file with a sorted index, execute the following
commands in the shell:

% tex lispref.texinfo
% texindex lispref.??
% tex lispref.texinfo

*** To create a DVI file with a permuted index, you may experiment
with `make-permuted-index'.

** INFO: A copy of a version of `texinfmt.el' that will format this
manual for Info is included in this distribution.

Before formatting the Reference Manual for Info, you should byte
compile the version of `texinfmt.el' in this distribution. This way,
formatting will not take so long. Don't forget to load the `.elc'
file after you have compiled it! Then visit `lispref.texinfo' and
give the command `M-x texinfo-format-buffer'.

** INFO: Brian Fox is writing a new program for making Info files
called `makeinfo.c'. This program is written in C and can be used
separately from Emacs. `makeinfo' produces much better error messages
than `texinfo-format-buffer'.

`makeinfo.c' is now or should soon be part of this distribution. You
can run it on the `lispref.texinfo' file.
