Instructions for use of Rational Terminal Emulator on IBM PC January 7.1988 The attached files are designed to provide the functionality of a Rational or Facit terminal via an IBM PC class personal computer. This material is intended for use with the software package "Reflection 2", by Walker, Richer and Quinn, Inc. By incorporating the files included here in the setup configuration of Reflection 2, the user can access the Rational Environment via the standard PC, the AT, or the Enhanced 101/102 keyboards. There are two libraries included here. The first, Kbm_files, includes the files which map IBM PC keystrokes to Rational input sequences. The second, Keymap, includes files which, when used with the Rational Document Formattter, will produce keyboard overlay graphics which can be printed on a laser printer. 'Ready to Print' Postscript images are also included. Setting Up the PC as a Terminal Files in Kbm_Files directory are formatted as described in the Reflection 2 manual in the chapter describing remapping the keyboard. The user is encouraged to understand this material before proceeding on. The following must be complete prior to using the PC as a Rational Terminal A. Reflection 2 should be installed on the PC as described in the instruction manual. The user should be familiar with the basic operation of the emulator software. B. The Kermit file transfer software must be operational on this R1000. Kermit is public domain softare which provides a reliable file transfer capability from the R1000 to the PC. This software is available via the Rational Software Catalog. In order to emulate a Rational terminal, it is necessary to download the Kbm_Files to the PC, and create configuration files which will be used with Reflection 2. The downloading can be accomplished using the PC as a standard VT100, making use of it's Kermit Recieve capability. The following instructions list briefly the steps required to begin using the PC as a Rational terminal. Full details of these procedures are discussed in the Reflection 2 documentation. 1. Use the Reflection default configuration to start the emulator and initiate communication with the R1000. The communication parameters will depend on the specific communications equipment in use. 2. Log on to the R1000 as a standard Vt1000. At the "terminal type"prompt, enter: Vt100 24 80 Standard Vt100 keybindings are shown in the Reflection manal and the Rational documentation. 3. Execute the command Kermit.Send, as shown, to download the files in directory Kbm_Files to the PC. Kermit.Send (Source => "fully_qualified_name_of_file", Target => "R1000xx.kbm") where the Source is the fully qualified name of the Kbm_file which matches your keyboard type: R1000pc for PC or PC/XT keyboard R1000at for PC/AT keyboard R1000enh for Enhanced 101/102 keyboard Target should be the simple name chosen above, with the extension ".kbm" . 4. When the R1000 "Running" message comes on. open the Reflection Command Line on the PC, and enter "KR", for Kermit Recieve. The file will be transfered to the local DOS directory. 5. Once the file transfer is complete, exit to DOS using Alt-X. The Kbm file now must now be "compiled" into a configuration, or "CFG" file. (refer to you Reflection manual if you require additional details on this procedure). 6. At the DOS prompt, type "Keycomp R1000xx.KBM R1000xx.CFG" and return. When the Keycomp program stops running, you are ready to connect to the R1000 as a fully functional Rational terminal. 7. Execute Reflection 2 with your new CFG file. At the DOS prompt: R2 R1000xx.CFG At the "terminal type=" prompt, enter: Rational Vt100 24 80 This configures the R1000 to recieve Rational terminal input sequences, and generate Vt100 control codes for the terminal emulator. 8. It may be necessary to reset the communications parameters and save them as before in the new CFG file. Printing the Keymap Graphics In the Keymap directory are two types of files: Rational Document Formatter source files, and Postscript image files. All Postscript files have the _Ps suffix. Two files are included for each keyboard type. Function_keys contains the image for the function keys F1..F10, while Keypad contains the graphics image for the numeric keypad. Both of these files are included for each of the three keyboard types: PC/XT, PC/AT, or Enhanced 101/102. Use only the files which correspond to the hardware configuration of your PC. If the Rational Document Formatter is installed and running on your R1000, the Document Formatter files can be customized and changed as desired. Otherwise, the _Ps files can be printed directly via a laser printer to yield a graphical picture of the keymap overlay.
