>a2 Introduction
Whenever you want to make statistics on some subject you have to know
>ul
the history of the subject.
The part of the history of the subject that is
>ul
relevant
when making some statistic, we will call
>ul
the statistic frame.

The statistic frame is specified by two subjects. These are
>ul
the period of time of the history
that should be covered by the statistic and the 
>ul
set of information
(part of the information of the history) on which the figures of the
statistics are calculated.

>a2 The history of the DA-system
The DA-system includes a LOG-PROCESS, which produces a
>ul
total history of the system
on a so-called LOGFILE.

The history consists of records of information about each retrieval
from each operator position and from each operator,
each operation carried out by the supervisor, each update
transaction carried out by the maintenance operator, and so on.
These record of information are sorted in time.

>a2 The statistic frame
In order to specify the statistic frame the user has to state the
period of time and the set of information.
>a3 The period of time
The period of time is specified as a date interval and a time interval.

designates that the period of time of the history covered by the
statistics is March 3rd - March 8th 1981 from 9.00 to 12.00.

If the date interval is omitted the actual date is assumed.

If the time interval is omitted the interval 0.00 - 24.00 is assumed.

>a3 The set of information
The figures of the statistics will be calculated on information
extracted from the part of the history specified by the period of time.

Sometimes all the information is not relevant.
If a statistic only concerning the work done by a
special group is wanted all information about other groups are
irrelevant.  Selecting the set of information is done by selecting
the
>ul
set of operators/operator positions
which is wanted.

This will be described below.

When selecting the set of operators/operator positions the following
possibilities exist:

1. All (default)

- All operators/positions are included i.e. all records of information
logged in the specified period of time are used in calculating the figures
of the statistics. The figures calculated will then be system totals.

>ul
2. Group(s) of operators
   
- Only the specified group(s) of operators are included i.e. only the
records of information from operators in the specified access-group(s)
logged in the specified period of time will be used in cal_culating
the figures.

- If only one group is specified the figures calculated will be
group-totals.

- If more than one group is specified there will be calculated a set of
figures for each group, which is group-totals and a set of figures
that is totals of the total number of operators in the specified groups.

3. Group(s)/operator
    
- Only the specified group(s) of operators are included i.e. only the
records of information from operator's in the specified access-group(s)
logged in the specified period of time will be used in calculating
the figures.

- If only one group is specified there will be calculated a set
of figures per operator of the group, which is operator totals and a
set of figures, which is group-totals.

- If more than one group is specified there will also be produced
a set of figures designating all the operators involved.

4. Operator(s)
      
- Only the specified operator(s) are included. I.e. only the
records of information from the specified operator(s) logged in the
specified period of time will be used in calculating the figures.

- If only one operator is specified, there will be calculated a set
of figures, which is operator totals.

- If more than one operator is specified there will be calculated
a set of figures per operator which is operator totals and a set
of figures which is totals for all the operators specified.

5. Group(s) of positions
    
- As 2. group(s) of operators using the records of information logged
from position groups instead of records from operator groups.

- As 3. group(s)/operator using the records of information logged
from position groups instead of records from operator groups.

- As 4. operator(s) using records of information from positions
instead of records from operators.

8. Supervisor(s)

- Only the specified supervisor(s) are included. I.e. only the
records of information from the specified supervisor(s) logged in the
specified period of time will be used in calculating the figures.

- If only one supervisor is specified, there will be calculated
a set of figures, which is supervisor totals.

- If more than one supervisor is specified, there will be calculated
a set of figures per supervisor, which is supervisor totals and set
of figures, which is totals for all the supervisors specified.

The user has selected group(s)/operator and specified two different
groups with each 4 operators. He has
now decided that he wants the statistic (which he is going to choose later)
presented in the
following way:

 4 operator statistics from group 1
 1 group statistic from group 1
 4 operator statistics from group 2
 1 group statistic from group 2
 1 total statistic (group 1 + group 2)

In this way the statistic frame indicates that each chosen type of
statistic will be presented in 11 different surroundings.

Note that the figures of the total statistic not necessarily are the
sum of group 1 and group 2 figures, since the groups may have 
common members.

>a2 Statistics Types
The possible statistics to select are divided into the following
types:

  1. Enquiry statistics
  2. Supervision statistics
  3. Update statistics
  4. Job ordering statistics
  5. Distributions
  6. Summary reports

Type 1 concerns the normal enquiry operation and is the main group
of statistics.

Type 2 concerns the supervision operation.

Type 5 concerns interesting system figures (i.e.
response time,working time, number
of input characters etc.).
Type 6 concerns staff performance.

Each type contains a set of statistic items .
     
A statistic item is a type of information from the history that
can be

measured
in some way, when it is present in some statistic frame.

An example of a statistic item is the

telephone number inquiry.
It can be measured in a given frame by counting the number or
calculating the average response time etc.
   
>a3 Enquiry Statistics
The enquiry statistics type can be divided into the following
subtypes:

  1. General statistics
  2. Search enquiry statistics
  3. Utility list enquiry statistics
  4. Telephone number enquiry statistics
  5. Ex-directory telephone number
     enquiry statistics
  6. Other lookup enquiry statistics

Each of the subtypes contains a set of

statistic items,
which can be presented in a number of different ways. The output
formats and the subtypes (i.e. the set of statistic items of the
subtypes) will be described in greater detail below.

>a4 Measured times
This section describes the times that is measured concerning a normal
inquiry operation session.

A normal inquiry operation session can be illustrated as follows:

Note that working time can be expressed by the following formula:

and n is number of calls appearing during login time.

The statistics of the enquiry statistic type can be presented in
13 different output formats. These are:

This type of statistics concerns interesting statistic items in the
system. The following distributions are available:

   7. Distribution of Arabic/English
      parameter input
   8. Access frequence per page
   9. Access frequence per fixed
      page (Utility lists)

The above mentioned distribution will be described in greater
detail below.

>a4 Distribution of response times
This distribution is presented in two pages. Page 1 presents the number
of inquiries in the fixed response time intervals of length 250 ms.
The number is also given in per cent of total number of inquiries. The
third column gives the accumulated per cent.

Page 2 gives the distribution in form of a fractile table. This table
is derived from the accumulated per cent. In each per cent interval
the highest response time is presented.

The distribution of keying times are presented in just the same
way as the distribution of response times. The fixed keying time
intervals are of length 5 - 10 sec.

The distribution of response lines of search inquiry is presented
in two pages. Page 1 presents the number of inquiries having 1 response
line, 2 response lines etc. From 22 response lines, the number is
counted in intervals of half a page (10 lines). The counted number
is also given in per cent. The third column gives the accumulated
per cent.

Page 2 gives the distribution in form of a fractile table. This table
is derived from the accumulated per cent. In each per cent interval the
highest number of response lines is presented.

The distribution of input parameters is as follows:

Page 1 gives for each input parameter key the number of inquiries
in which the parameter key was pushed in the input line of the inquiry.

Page 2 gives the number of inquiries in which a given  combination
of input parameters was present in the input line. The combination is
defined by the user.

The distribution of input characters consists of 2 pages. Page 1
gives the number of inquiries with 1 input character, 2 input characters

Page 2 gives the distribution in form of a fractile table. This table
is derived from the accumulated per cent. In each per cent 
interval the highest number of input characters is presented.

The distribution of Arabic/English parameter input gives for each
parameter key (last name key, street key etc.) the number of times,

Finally it gives the number of inquiries with Arabic parameter input,
the number of inquiries with English parameter input, and the number
of inquiries with both Arabic and English parameter input. The number
is given in per cent of total number of inquiries in the given frame.
