1. Overview

This release note describes the Beta 1 release of Insight, Rev1_0_1. The pur-
pose of this release is to collect customer feedback on the product's functions
and usability. See your Rational Technical Representative if you have feedback.

2. Documentation

Use the Rational Insight User's Manual (product number 4000-00676, February
1992) as the source of documentation for this product.

3. Configuration

Insight requires the following configuration:

n	Rational Environment with Delta 2.2

n	Sun SPARCstation running SunOs 4.1.1

n	an X display device

3.1. Compatibility with OpenWindows

To run Insight under OpenWindows rather than Motif, OpenWindows must be started
with the "-noauth" option.

4. Views Included in This Release

This release includes the following views:

n	!Tools.Design.Insight.Insight_Commands.Rev1_0_Spec

n	!Tools.Design.Insight.Insight_Commands.Code1_0_1

n	/vendor/rational/insight/release.1_0_1 (on the workstation)

5. Problems Fixed

This is the first external release. The following problems have been fixed
since the last internal release.

n	Main units are now recognized and appear as a main subprogram icon.

n	A "garbage args" message no longer appears when users specify a null
string in a dialog box.

n	A warning message is now written to the Environment log when a combined
subsystem has no view in the current activity.

n	A warning message is now written to the Environment log when a spec/load
subsystem has no view in the current activity.

n	The File:Definition command no longer regenerates the diagram in certain
cases where the appropriate diagram file already exists.

n	$$$ messages are no longer generated. Using "???,<PROFILE>" as the
response parameter will display these Internal messages.

n	Certain dependencies no longer appear twice after formatting.

n	The "could not find load view" message no longer appears multiple times.

n	The user is no longer prompted for diagram names after exiting and declin-
ing to save changes.

n	Groups diagram files can now be opened.

n	The File:Definition command on !Users.Rfg now works when the diagram con-
text is !Users.Rfg.Scratch.

n	Defining subsystems in a library diagram are now stored with their full
view pathname for use in subsequent File:Definition commands.

n	Diagrams are now consistently regenerated.

n	The view name and units directory are used for the defining pathname.

n	Horizontal spacing has been improved.

n	Product authorization and token checking have been added.

n	The title (caption) now appears in the generated postscript.

n	Formatting has been improved by attempting to make long lines as straight
as possible

n	Unconnected icons are now placed on a level by themselves at the top of a
diagram.

n	The problem where certain parts of a diagram were widely separated from
the rest of the diagram has been fixed.

n	Positive save changes messages now appear when exiting.

n	The product name has been changed to Insight in all occurrences in the
software.

n	The File:Close_All command prompts for all newly generated diagrams before
closing windows. Diagrams previously saved but since modified are also
saved but the user is not prompted for a new name.

6. Known Problems

The following software problems have not been fixed.

n	The Browse:Environment Definition command still results in Class_Error.
These messages are currently being suppressed.

n	The default postscript file name ends in _Ps_Ps rather than _Ps.

n	Printing a diagram with a title (caption) sometimes results in a post-
script printer error.

n	Existing postscript files cannot be overwritten.

n	Important informational messages from the remote shell invocation are cur-
rently filtered out. The current workaround is to display debug messages
by typing "???,<PROFILE>" as the response parameter of the Insight . This
will display any informational messages generated by remote shell or the
illustrator that are normally not logged.

n	Changing the activity after Insight has been invoked may not be reflected
when you generate subsequent diagrams. The workaround is to restart
Insight after changing the activity.

n	Clicking repeatedly may alternate selection of spec and body overlapped
icons. Unless the mouse moves, the same icon should always be selected.

n	Related to the above, placing the cursor over the spec and clicking some-
times selects the body instead.

n	With certain X configurations, the delete key and backspace key do not
work.

n	In certain cases, dismissing a dialog box leaves a white "hole" in the
window because the illustrator does not refresh the window when getting an
X expose event. This can occur when the dialog box is initiating a long
transaction with the Rational Environment, for example, when generating a
large number of dependencies. It may occur in other cases as well.

n	The text widget in a dialog box must be clicked before text can be
entered. The workaround is to place "insight*keyboardFocusPolicy: pointer"
in the user's.Xdefaults file. Insight does not currently provide an appli-
cations defaults file.

n	An unused palette item still appears and should be removed.

n	The File:New command does not accept an activity as a naming expression.

n	Insight has not been tested on Delta 3.0.

n	The main window has a permanent "saved" indication when in fact it cannot
be saved nor modified.

n	Any fatal error still results in the Insight command continuing to run on
the Environment. Insight blocks on illustrator termination but the commu-
nications channel is never aborted. The workaround is to kill the job when
a fatal error occurs.

n	Not all Environment messages start with a capital letter.

n	Not all Environment messages have pathnames in upper case.

n	Postscript generation has a problem with the default margin.

n	When using the Ftp.Remote_Machine session switch instead of the Remote
Machine parameter, the default display will not be correct. The workaround
when using the Ftp.Remote_Machine switch is to manually set the X_Display
parameter, even if the X display is the same device as the remote machine.

n	The File:New command sometimes correctly collapses modules in spec views
with their corresponding unit in a load view. Insight does not support
spec/load view look through. However, in some cases as mentioned, this
does work. For example, the expression "!subsystem.[@'-
view.units.@,@'spec_view.units.@]" should correctly collapse multiple
occurrences of any specifications in both views into one module icon. This
does not currently work in all cases.

n	When a window is iconified, Noname# is used as the name even if the dia-
gram has been saved.

n	The Noname# naming scheme skips values of n whenever an attempt to gener-
ate a new diagram fails. The number should be recycled in these cases.

n	No menu item equivalent exists for double-click on a subsystem or group
icon.

n	The File:Definition command generates a new diagram if a view is not spec-
ified even if a diagram for the defining object already exists.

n	Motif Close exits the application instead of only closing the current win-
dow.

n	Occasionally, a subdiagram is placed to far to the right or left when it
could be placed approximately centered under its parent icons.
