Rational Insight Release Information Rational and R1000 are registered trademarks and Rational Environment and Rational Subsystems are trademarks of Rational. UNIX is a registered trademark of AT&T. SunOs is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc. SPARCstation is a trademark of SPARC International, Inc., licensed exclusively to Sun Microsystems, Inc. 1. Overview This release note describes the production release of Insight, Rev1_3_0. 2. Documentation Use the Rational Insight User's Manual (product number 4000-00676, August 1992) as the source of documentation for this product. Note the manual uses the term "workstation" to refer to both the Sun SPARCstation and IBM RS/6000. Be advised this release only supports the Sun. 3. Configuration Insight requires the following configuration: n Rational Environment with Delta 2.2 or later n Sun SPARCstation running SunOs 4.1.1, X11R4 or X11R5, and the Motif Window Manager. n an X display device 3.1. Compatibility with OpenWindows The preferred configuration is X11 and Motif. Insight will however run in a degraded mode under OpenWindows. Functionality is complete but the product look is much different. Note that patches from Sun are required to run Insight. To run Insight under OpenWindows rather than Motif, OpenWindows must be started with the "-noauth" option. See the installation instructions for more information. 4. Views Included in This Release This release includes the following views: n !Tools.Design.Insight.Insight_Commands.Rev1_3_Spec n !Tools.Design.Insight.Insight_Commands.Code1_3_0 n /vendor/rational/insight/release.1_3_0 (on the workstation) 5. Problems Fixed The following software problems have been fixed since the last release. n 1082215-Back-Fpt, 1464297-Back-Fpt - The Insight_Batch.Generate_Postscript command now has all measure names specified as plural. n 1280381-Back-Rfg - The Browse menu item on diagram windows now has a mnemonic (to allow <ALT>B to work). n 1624644-Back-Rfg - The Browse:Diagram command now works on libraries. n 1700486-Back-Ken - The File:Print command now saves diagrams with a subclass of postscript. n 1739393-Back-Rfg - When a defining object has no contents, an incorrect "does not identify an existing object" message is no longer produced. Instead, an empty diagram window appears. Note that an error message still occurs for empty diagrams created by the File:New command. n 1963814-Back-Rfg - Motif Close now just closes the current window instead of exiting the application. n 2289774-Back-Rfg - The File:Save As and File:Close All commands no longer have the same mnemonic. n 2375521-Back-Rfg - The Edit:Group command no longer generates error messages indicating nodes are outside the bounding box. n 2515113-Back-Ken - A more useful message is displayed when using the Browse:Definition command with a bad object context. n 2528262-Back-Rfg - The File:Save command now removes any groups when overwriting the parent diagram. If the new diagram has groups, these will be saved but the old groups will be deleted. n 2773513-Back-Fpt - The Insight_Batch.Paper_Kind type values for the A0 and A1 paper sizes have been corrected. n 3148064-Back-Rfg - Incorrectly specifying an activity with the Options:Activity command no longer cancels the command. In this case, a follow-up dialog box is presented to allow a chance to correct mistakes. n 3316570-Back-Rfg - The Title parameter of the Insight_Batch.Generate_Postscript command has been renamed to Include_Description to match the new File:Print dialog box. n 345418-Back-Rfg,4860215-Back-Ken - The Edit:Group command correctly capitalizes group names. n 3496834-Back-Rfg - The Browse:Environment command now generates a "A group does not correspond to any environment object" message when a group has been selected. n 3544745-Back-Fpt - The Edit:Move to Group command now updates the source window without waiting for another event. n 40821117-Back-Rfg - The correct pathname is now echoed in the log when the File:New command is used with an indirect file. n 4575590-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Format command no longer generates an internal error such as "constraint error (varray_of_Vertex) in operator + index=145 size=2241". n 4627873-Back-Fpt, 6339493-Back-Fpt - Diagrams created with the Edit:Group command and diagrams containing groups no longer have extra white space. n 4673266-Back-Fpt - An internal problem with memory allocation has been corrected. n 492905-Back-Jdar, 6457546-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Move to Group and Edit:Ungroup commands now correctly update group dependencies. n 493851-Back-Rfg - Layout no longer introduces spurious "?" characters which resulted in a syntax error when using the Edit:Format command. n 5051572-Back-Rfg, 9192222-Back-Ken - Answering the File:New command with a null response and ok no longer results in the server raising Constraint_Error. n 5211228-Back-Jdar - The File:Close command on a group now closes just the group window instead of the windows for the entire group tree. n 5890533-Back-Jdar - A newly saved diagram when iconified will have the same name as the title bar of the window, rather than an incorrect Noname#. n 6629386-Back-Ken - The busy watch cursor is now displayed in most dialog boxes (although not the File:Print dialog box).. n 6707408-Rang-Caro - The Insight_Batch package now uses /bin/rm rather than rm to remove temporary files on the workstation. This will avoid problems when rm has been aliased. n 7173460-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Move to Group command no longer generates an internal error message when trying to move an object to a group that does exist but is outside the group tree. n 7423273-Back-Fpt, 8886200-Back-Rfg - The Edit:Move to Group command now updates the composite group dependencies in the parent diagram when moving an icon to a group. When a module is moved from one group to another, both group's diagrams are modified as well as group diagrams containing those diagrams. Thus, multiple diagrams now have correct group dependencies. The Edit:Ungroup and Edit:Group commands no longer in turn cause incorrect dependencies if a diagram had been previously made incorrect by the Edit:Move to Group command. This problem will not occur in diagrams generated with this release. Diagrams generated with the previous release may still have erroneous dependencies. n 7709840-Back-Rfg - The File:Print command now correctly handles the default margin. n 7851535-Rang-Caro - The Insight_Batch package now uses "chdir $HOME" instead of "cd $HOME". This will avoid problems when cd has been aliased. n 7999725-Back-Jdar, 4204578-Back-Jdar, 5011407-Back-Jdar, 2562148-Back-Jdar, 9298142-Back-Jdar, 2794954-Back-Jdar, 5213280-Back-Jdar, 7715274-Back-Jdar, 501330-Back-Jdar, 402558-Back-Rfg, 9668800-Back-Jdar, 1498191-Back-Rfg - Numerous Edit:Ungroup, Edit:Group, and Edit:Move to Group command problems were fixed. Note that group diagrams generated with a previous release may still be incorrect. n 8038785-Back-Jdar - The Browse:Definition command will now find and display an existing diagram if one is present in the diagram context, rather than always regenerating. n 8094514-Back-Jdar - The watch cursor remains visible until the File:Save operation has completed. n 8661900-Back-Ken - The Edit:Ungroup command now correctly manages windows after groups have been ungrouped. n 8886200-Back-Rfg - The Edit:Move to Group command now correctly updates the cross-group dependencies in the parent diagram when moving an icon to another group. n 9086887-Back-Rfg - The Edit:Group command no longer allows creation of a group with the same name as a group already part of the diagram as saved in the diagram context. The command had already prevented this when the group is currently open in a window. n 9148154-Rang-Caro - After removing all units from a group diagram and closing it, the Browse:Diagram command no longer has an assertion error when trying to reopen the group. n 9570848-Back-Rfg - The Edit:Ungroup command no longer core dumps when ungrouping a group which has been saved as a file but is not currently in a window. n 9779616-Back-Rfg - Diagnostic output from the illustrator is now suppressed. n 9686230-Back-Jdar - The File:Print command results in printed diagrams where arcs may appear on top of icons instead of behind them. This is deliberate in order to make it easier to trace dependencies between modules. n 9986044-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Group command no longer crashes when trying to group units after a File:New command. 6. Known Problems The following software problems have not been fixed. n 1019466-Back-Rfg - Output generated by a .cshrc file will appear in diagrams generated by Insight_Batch. The workaround is to remove any commands in that file that write to standard output or else adding a conditional expression to avoid executing those commands when run non-interactively. n 1886024-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Move to Group command will copy modules to a position in the target group which is the same as their position in the original diagram. This may be inappropriate. The workaround is to use the Edit:Format command after moving to a group. n 1893192-Back-Rfg - When running a File:New command, the cursor does not change into a watch cursor. This bug only occurs under OpenWindows. n 2228910-Back-Jdar - The File:Close command closes all group windows when operating on any one group in the group tree if the group window has not been previously saved. n 2308665-Back-Fpt - The File:Print command generates an internal server error when saving postscript to a name that is a directory, not a file. n 2733934-Back-Fpt - The Edit:Format command core dumps with a constraint error in one particular diagram. n 3281381-Back-Rfg - The text widget in a dialog box must be clicked before text can be entered. The workaround is to place "insight*keyboardFocusPolicy: pointer" in the user's.Xdefaults file. Insight does not currently provide an applications defaults file. n 3401016-Back-Rfg - In certain cases, the Insight server job does not terminate, even after logging out of an Environment session. n 3622095-Back-Rfg -The Browse:Definition command crashes intermittently with a fatal X server error when the X display is a PC. n 381816-Back-Fpt - Labels are incorrectly suppressed when the user drags a spec and a body apart. n 3840123-Back-Rfg - Not all Environment messages have pathnames in upper case. n 497847-Back-Rfg - Enlarging a window containing a diagram with large number of modules is slow. n 5912112-Back-Jdar - The illustrator may handle expose events on a diagram window with large numbers of elements (e.g. 2000) in an abnormally slow manner. n 5928362-Back-Rfg - Occasionally, a subdiagram is placed to far to the right or left when it could be placed approximately centered under its parent icons. n 5973132-Back-Ken - The Edit:Ungroup command sometimes places ungrouped objects under pre-existing objects. The workaround is to use the Edit:Format command after ungroupng. n 6049633-Back-Fpt - The Edit:Ungroup command sometimes leaves arrowheads off of arcs leading from the group just ungrouped. n 6176895-Back-Fpt - The File:Save As command incorrectly allows the storing of multiple defining diagrams into any diagram context not the current one. n 6268646-Back-Jdar - The File:Print command produces printed diagrams with descriptions that make no sense when the diagram is a group e.g. "Definition of". n 6844561-Bozo-Rfg - On one machine, remote shell did not accept the default remote user name. n 7168383-Back-Rfg - Duplicate subsystem labels are not expanded when the simple subsystem names match the name of an Ada unit. n 7262688-Back-Rfg - With certain X configurations, the delete key and backspace key do not work n 7459956-Back-Fpt - The data manager does not always terminate when the illustrator terminates because of an internal error. n 7475742-Back-Rfg - Labels are no longer independently selectable from icons. In particular, clicking on the part of the label overlapping the icon will select both the label and the icon. However, clicking on the part of a label hanging over the edge of the icon still only selects the label. n 7824283-Back-Rfg - When holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse, what gets selected is not always consistent. Sometimes, only labels get selected, sometimes specs and most bodies etc. n 7953938-Back-Rfg - The File:Save As command cannot save a defining diagram, even if it has been modified, if a defining diagram for that object already exists in the diagram context. Deleting the diagram closes the window so the user never gets the chance to do a File:Save As. n 7956270-Back-Rfg - The main window icon has no label when Insight is run under the twm window manager. n 8064772-Back-Rfg - The File:New command does not accept an activity as a naming expression. n 8317060-Back-Jdar - The Edit:Format command may leak memory which could cause the illustrator to fail after many formats. n 8724670-Back-Rfg - The File:Print command core dumps when run on an empty diagram. n 8869983-Back-Fpt - The File:Print command generates encapsulated Postscript without using a private dictionary. Name conflicts are possible between the encapsulated diagram and the document containing it. n 8962034-Back-Rfg - In certain cases, dismissing a dialog box leaves a white "hole" in the window because the illustrator does not refresh the window when getting an X expose event. This can occur when the dialog box is initiating a long transaction with the Rational Environment, for example, when generating a large number of dependencies. It may occur in other cases as well. n 9020092-Back-Rfg, 7832680-Back-Rfg, 5065248-Back-Fpt, 3877791-Back-Ken - Printing diagrams sometimes fails with postscript errors from the printer. The workaround is to copy the Postscript file to the workstation and queue it there. n 9076673-Back-Fpt - The File:Print command generates an incorrect error message when the file name does not denote an existing directory. n 956630-Back-Rfg - The File:New command generates a fatal error message when ACL's prevent the calculation of subsystem imports. This should be treated as a normal error. n 978238-Back-Rfg - A white border appears around the bit-mapped library icon which can result in slightly disconnected arcs. 7. New Features n No extra arc bends are introduced by the File:Print command. The printed arcs will be similar, if not identical to the arcs in the window. n The File:Print command dialog box has been significantly changed.
